2021 NFL Draft Prospect Profile: EDGE, Joseph Ossai, Texas

Height: 6’4″
Weight: 253 lbs.
Class: Junior
School: Texas

Joseph Ossai is a very interesting EDGE prospect in this year’s class. Ossai is probably one of the best athletic rushers we’ve ever seen. From his dominant play at Texas to his outstanding pro-day numbers, Joseph Ossai has impressed all of us this season. His high motor and sheer athletic talent have helped dramatically increase his draft stock.

Positives: Joseph Ossai is an incredible athlete and has an amazing length that disrupts passers and stops runners at their tracks. Joseph Ossai is most likely one of the most explosive EDGE prospects in this class with his amazing speed and burst off the edge which pressure quarterbacks into making questionable throws. One of the biggest strengths of Ossai is his incredible motor. Ossai never seems to quit on plays and always seems to want to play every snap of the game.

Negatives: One of Ossai’s biggest weaknesses is undoubtedly his rawness. Joesph Ossai sometimes struggles against more physical tackles due to his lack of pass-rush moves. Ossai struggles with his defense schemes off the edge due to his lack of experience at the edge position.

Joesph Ossai’s Position Versatility

Joseph Ossai started 24 out of 36 games for the Longhorns during his tenure there. During his first two years at Texas Ossai was positioned as a linebacker, until his 2020 season where he moved to the EDGE. Ossai was a four-star recruit out of Conroe, Texas, where he attended Oak Ridge High School and caught the eye of many college football programs. Ultimately he chose to stay close to home and committed to Texas.

Joesph Ossai’s Career at Texas

During his 2019 season, Ossai had a 90 tackle, 13.5 tackle for a loss, and five-sack season in 13 2019 games at linebacker. In 2020, at EDGE, he totaled 55 tackles, 15.5 tackles for a loss, and 5.5 sacks while forcing three fumbles. While playing two positions in college could hinder your performance, it shows your position versatility. Joseph Ossai also showed leadership on and off the gridiron.

His amazing junior season earned him many awards, such as First Team All Big-12 in 2020, and was an honorable mention for Big-12 Defensive Player of the Year and Defensive Lineman of the Year. Ossai was also a semifinalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award in 2020.

Draftable Traits

Joseph Ossai’s biggest draft-able trait is his incredible size and speed; his pro-day showed that he could easily be the most athletic edge prospect we’ve ever seen. His versatility could also be a big trait in the future if he worked more on his pass coverage. With time to develop and time to learn more pass rush moves and better schemes against the run, he could be a total steal in this draft.

Joseph Ossai’s Best Fit In the NFL

One of the best fits for Ossai in my opinion would be the New England Patriots, the Patriots have one of the most versatile defensive schemes in the NFL. Not only do the Patriots have one of the most versatile defensive schemes the Patriots also need help up front, and with the coaching of the Patriots staff, the Patriots could be an amazing fit for Ossai.
