Did The New York Yankees Do Enough At The Trade Deadline?

The Yankees made big waves at the deadline in grabbing two of the biggest bats on the market. Anthony Rizzo and Joey Gallo were two of the premier targets for offensively needy teams and the Yankees managed to scoop both of them up.

Moreover, the Yankees are essentially not paying either of them as the Cubs and Rangers are paying the salaries. The moves were great and didn’t ultimately cost them very much, but was it enough?

Much has been made about the Yankees’ struggles this year. They’ve been the most underperforming offense all year and have been dragged along by their pitching. The additions of Gallo and Rizzo are supposed to fix that. What’s more, they seem to have done so already.

Gallo hasn’t ultimately contributed a ton, but Rizzo has. Firstly, he immediately made himself a fan favorite with the first series. Secondly, he had huge, timely hits and tons of walks, leading the Yankees to a sweep of the Marlins. Lastly, Rizzo became the first Yankee ever to record an RBI in the first six games with the team. Immediate dividends.

The Yankees hold a record of 5-1 since acquiring Gallo and Rizzo, the first game of the Mariners series notwithstanding. That isn’t necessarily sustainable. On the other hand, winning more series definitely is. If the Yankees can continue winning series like that, they’ll make short work of the five-game deficit they face. Currently the first Wild Card, the Red Sox once had a nine-game lead over the Yankees, and that has dwindled heavily.

What ultimately might be a push for a second Wild Card was probably worth it, and yeah, it’ll be enough. The full-strength lineup of:

  • LeMahieu 2B
  • Rizzo 1B
  • Judge CF
  • Gallo RF
  • Stanton LF
  • Voit DH
  • Sanchez C
  • Torres SS
  • Urshela 3B

Is a lot better than a lineup consisting of:

  • LeMahieu 2B
  • Judge RF
  • Stanton DH
  • Voit 1B
  • Sanchez C
  • Torres SS
  • Urshela 3B
  • Allen LF
  • Gardner CF

The Yankees are currently dealing with a COVID outbreak and are missing tons of people. Urshela is out with a hamstring issue. Gary Sanchez, Jordan Montgomery, and Gerrit Cole have tested positive. The moves the Yankees made could not have come at a better time. While they aren’t going to have as much impact now when those players return they will.

While it might be just for a Wild Card, those moves are enough to get them there. The American League is crowded, but the Yankees are one of the good teams. This early success is just a taste of what’s to come. Again, Joey Gallo has been pretty cold since joining the Yankees. However, imagine when he heats up (he has two doubles at the time of writing).
