Marlins Make History This Time In A Good Way

The Miami Marlins made history again, this time in a positive way when they announced the hiring of Kim Ng to become the first female GM in Major League Baseball. Not only is NG the first female GM in MLB, but is also the first Asian-American woman to hold a leadership position in an MLB team. Ng also becomes the first female to serve in the GM capacity of a men’s league in the United States.

This is not what you would call a token hire. Ng has been in MLB for over 30 years and is one of the more qualified candidates to lead a team. The Marlins are an organization that has one of the most diverse front offices in MLB. Caroline O’Conner is the team’s COO. The addition of NG as GM puts females in the top two leadership positions in the Marlins organization.

Ng has earned this position through her hard work. After graduating from the University of Chicago, Ng began her career as an intern with the Chicago White Sox in 1990. She then moved on to the New York Yankees as an assistant GM from 1998-2001. She was also a key member of the Los Angeles Dodgers organization as Vice President and assistant GM from 2002-2011. Ng then moved to the offices of Major League Baseball, where she served as the Senior VP of baseball operations.

Before accepting the GM position of the Miami Marlins, NG had interviewed for GM vacancies in Seattle, San Diego, San Francisco, and Anaheim. Under Ng’s leadership, she has guided her organizations to eight post-season appearances and has three World Series rings on her resume. You would be hard-pressed to find any executive in North American sports currently that has that kind of resume.

In a statement issued by the Marlins, Ng said:

“We are building for the long term in South Florida. We are developing a forward-thinking, collaborative, creative baseball operation made up of incredibly talented and dedicated staff who have, over the last few years, laid a great foundation for success.”

The Marlins ownership team led by Derek Jeter and Bruce Sherman are excited to have Ng on the team:

“On behalf of principal owner Bruce Sherman and our entire ownership group, we look forward to Kim bringing a wealth of knowledge and championship-level experience to the Miami Marlins. Her leadership of our baseball operations team will play a major role in our path toward sustained success. Additionally, her extensive work in expanding youth baseball and softball initiatives will enhance our efforts to grow the game among our local youth as we continue to make a positive impact on the South Florida community.”

MLB has been relegated to the third or fourth most popular sport behind football and basketball in America, and some markets hockey. When there is news from MLB, it sometimes tends to be negative. MLB has a problem with how to market their big stars.

Unless there is a big trade or a free agent signing, baseball news is dormant during the winter months. The hiring of Ng by the Marlins will shine a spotlight on MLB, the Marlins organization, and bring some new fans to the game. The Marlins were the surprise team of the 2021 season as they finished with a 31-29 record. The Marlins made the playoffs before losing to the Atlanta Braves in the wildcard round.

The future is bright for baseball in Miami and for the Marlins. That future just got a bit brighter with the hiring of Kim Ng as General manager.
