The Fuel Tank: Dan Snyder Should Sell The Washington Football Team Already

Hello newcomers of the site and welcome to the Fuel Tank! In this exciting new column, we will be breaking down one of the hottest NFL news topics and then I will be giving my viewpoint on the topic with no remorse. Please don’t bash anyone or post any hateful comments as everyone has a right to their own opinion! With that said, let’s jump right into today’s story.

If you told me to name one of the biggest screw-ups among all of the NFL franchises, my immediate answer would be the Washington Football Team. More allegations have come up that Dan Snyder has sexually assaulted former employees along with others inside the organization. The allegations go far and wide into what they’ve done criminally as of the past couple of months and, as a football team, they’ve done/shown absolutely nothing to its fans or the rest of the league. You may ask yourselves, who’s the main person to blame here and it’s none other than the owner, Dan Snyder, himself!

I believe that Dan Snyder should sell-off the Washington Football Team. This falls under two key disturbing fallacies.

He has let multiple atrocities happen under/with his own two eyes

Let’s start off from a month ago when the Washington Post released a bombshell article that shocked the NFL and the world. 15 former Washington Football Team female employees shared their experiences about instances about multiple forms of misconduct that include, but are not limited to sexual assault, drug abuse, and multiple forms of harassment from the male higher-ups of the organization. Snyder is an owner of the team which means that he is one of the leaders of that organization, yet he failed to sniff out this toxicity from forming and it has outbroken into something as disturbing as what has been stated. (You can read the article with the link here

You think it would end there, but you couldn’t be further from the truth. It gets extremely worse than expected.

Dan Snyder now has allegations of sexual harassment that have been placed by a former cheerleader for the organization. According to the NFL and the Washington Post, the former cheerleader stated that Snyder invited her to a hotel room with one of his friends and that longtime team executive Larry Michael made extra “cheer-leading” (explicit) videos for the owner showing sensitive material that wasn’t made public. With all of the allegations that we’ve seen so far, you can clearly guess what the video was about. It’s clear to see that the culture isn’t “damn good” like former Washington GM/president Bruce Allen says it is.

Snyder was never a good owner to begin with

Snyder bought the Washington organization back in 1999 and they’ve barely done anything since. In the past 20 years, Washington was only made it to the playoffs five times, which is terrible for any franchise, and they’ve either lost in the wildcard or the divisional round. We also can’t forget how they’ve destroyed the careers of players like Rober Griffin III and the other questionable things that have occurred over the past 20 years like the firing of Marty Schottenheimer and the trade/re-signing of Donovan McNabb that ultimately failed.

Football aside, he has always led Washington by fear according to dozens of the teams’ employees. According to the Washington Post, there were “unwritten rules” like “always call the owner “Mr. Snyder” or “Sir,” never “Dan.” Never look him in the eyes. And if he comes walking your way, turn around and head in the other direction. Megan Imbert, a former employee for the organization, has stated that “the organization is (truly) led by fear”.

Susan Miller, a former Virginia employee referral agency, recalls a story between the years 2000 to 2001 when Snyder’s executive assistant fired a woman that Miller sent to work their due to the fact that she looked “frumpy” or “dowdy.” Someone who fires people over something like that doesn’t deserve to be an owner of anything at this rate. It reached the point where Miller stopped sending people to work there due to the environment that Snyder had put into effect.

The list doesn’t end there as Snyder treated his female employees horribly and like servants. According to three former assistants of Snyder, the rules included were “don’t speak too loudly; never eat in front of him; don’t go to the bathroom unless another assistant is available to cover the phones; don’t take a lunch break, but if you must eat at your desk, make sure the food doesn’t smell; clean the owner’s desk each morning, ensuring that his calendar and daily kitchen menu are in the proper locations and that his paper clips all face the same direction” and other directives included “wear heels but don’t let your heels clack loudly. Wear smart business attire but be prepared to run down two flights of stairs and up again for ice from the kitchen in the basement”.

Imagine working somewhere where they don’t even treat you like a human being and place you under this “helicopter parent” style of a work-environment. No one would enjoy that and I’m sure everyone would avoid it as best as they can.

Overall, Dan Snyder should just sell off the Washington Football Team. It needs a new culture and Snyder believes it as so, but this “new culture” begins with Snyder effectively leaving the organization for good. I don’t think anyone would miss him anyway.
