Justin Haak wanted out of New York. And when LA Galaxy came calling, he didn't hesitate — even when NYCFC offered him more money to stay.

The 24-year-old midfielder signed with the Galaxy as a free agent on Monday, ending his six-year stint with New York City FC. The move reunites him with a club that sees him as a key piece for their 2026 campaign.

Why he left money on the table

According to MLS insider Tom Bogert, Haak turned down a larger offer from NYCFC to join the Galaxy. That's not a decision players make lightly in a league where contracts aren't guaranteed beyond their terms.

"Justin brings a competitive mentality that aligns with our culture," said Galaxy General Manager Will Kuntz. "His ability to control the midfield and distribute the ball effectively will be a valuable asset to our squad."

Head coach Greg Vanney echoed the sentiment: "Justin's versatility and work rate stood out to us. He has the qualities we look for in a Galaxy player, and we're confident he will make an immediate impact."

What Galaxy is getting

Haak made 134 appearances for NYCFC across all competitions, contributing 3 goals and 10 assists. Those numbers don't scream star power, but his role was never about box score production.

A product of the NYCFC academy, Haak developed into one of the more reliable holding midfielders in MLS. His ability to shield the back line while initiating attacks made him essential to New York's system under multiple coaches.

Last season he logged 2,340 minutes across 30 matches, starting 26 of them.

The date circled on the calendar

February 22, 2026. That's when the Galaxy travel to Yankee Stadium to face NYCFC — and Haak's former teammates.

These reunions always carry extra juice. Haak spent his entire professional career in the Bronx. He came through the academy, earned his first team minutes, and became a fixture in the starting eleven. Walking into that stadium wearing Galaxy colors will mean something.

For now, he's focused on adapting to life on the West Coast. Training camp begins in January, and Vanney will want to integrate him quickly into a midfield that already includes Riqui Puig and Marco Reus.

The Galaxy open the 2026 season on February 15 against San Jose. Haak should be in the lineup.
